Hallberg was noticeably slower in her client interactions.When Hallberg and Schneider switched schmelzglas signatures for a week, he found out what exactly was causing the hold-up.In his hellish week of being perceived as a woman, Schneider found that clients wouldnt listen to him even when he was giving the same advice he usually did, he was underestimated, interrupted, disrespected, and even asked on a date by a client.It became very clear to him the invisible advantage he had as a man, in which his conversati ons were faster and less fraught.But whenHallberg and Schneider took this evidence to their boss, they saw how hard it is to convince some people that women are treated differently he didnt believe it.There are a thousand reasons why the clients could have reacted differently that way. It could be the work, the performance you have no way of knowing, their boss said, according to Hallberg.While Schneider was shocked, Hallberg wasnt.She detailed how this wasnt her first time at this rodeo in a companion essayon Medium after Schneiders story went viral.When the boss hired Hallberg, he disparaged how women work. The boss put down Schneider by comparing him to a woman he tends to get over emotional about things and let that get in the way of his writing. Hes kind of a girl like that.In response, Hallberg said she put up walls, swore mora and developed a tough exterior, saying she had to act like a man to be found funny and be accepted in male spaces.Hallberg, for her part, had enough of the indignities and eventually quit to start her own web copywriting business.In an office of one, I can finally put my walls down, she wrote.Women share their stories of being patronizedReacting to Schneiders story on Twitter, journalist Tasneem Raja tweeted that she had, 100% experienced this as a reporter. Still, the Boston Symphony Orchestra noticed that blind auditions didnt result in more women getting hired.They realized that, even if a musician was behind a screen, he or she had to walk to it - and the jury was being influenced by the sound of the womens hee ls. After that, the percent of female musicians in the five top U.S. orchestras increased from to 21% in 1993 from 6% in 1970.But even if peoplecant see or hear you, having a name that identifies you as a woman will still hurt you. A 2015 study on online instructorsshowed that when an assistant instructor identified as a female, students would rate them lower in their evaluations than for instructors who identified as male. Since student ratings are a significant factor ofteacher evaluations, this gender bias can significantly impactteachers careers.But educators can be prejudiced too. In a 2014 study, researchers sent out identical letters from prospective students to professors to test whether bias was a factor in getting a response and a leg up in your academic career. The only difference in each letter? Whether the email was signed by a fictional Meredith Roberts, Lamar Washington, Juanita Martinez, Raj Singh or aChang Huang. In emails to business schools, 87% of white mengot a response compared with 62% of all womenand minorities combined.Organizations and bosses should treat all of their workers fairly, but when theyfail you, its unfortunately all on you to fight back. In her interactions with her co-workers, Hallberg persisted when they ignored or underestimated her, writing, When they drifted off and stopped paying attention while I was talking, Id rewrite it in an email and force my words in front of their eyes. For example, you could say, I am willing to accept between $45,000-$60,000. But heres the trick make sure that your low-end range number is one that youre comfortable accepting, since many employers will veer towards that number. Earlier this month, eight teams of social entrepreneurs presented hardware-led inventions that are intended to benefit society at the ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) in Washington, D.C. At the end of the competition, which was held June 13, three of the finalists ? the developers of products addressing problems with drinking water safety, the incubation of chicken eggs and fish farming in underserved communities ? were named the regional grand-prize winners of the event. As winners of the ISHOW USA, the three teams ? Caminos de Agua, Kukua Labs and WEtech ? each received a share of $30,000 in seed grants as well as technical advice and support to assist in the commercialization of their products. In addition, each of the three winners will have the chance to take part in the ISHOW Bootcamp this October in New York City with the six winners of the ASME ISHOWs that were held earlier this spring in Bengaluru, India, and Nairobi, Kenya. One of the three winning entries at ISHOW USA, Aguadapt, is an inexpensive, family-sized water filtration system that eliminates organic chemicals and nearly all pathogens. The filter, which was developed by nonprofit outfit Caminos de Agua of Guanajuato, Mexico, is simple to install in common containers and will remain operational for up to three years. Kukua, another winning product at ISHOW USA, is an affordable, energy-efficient chicken egg incubator that was developed for the approximately 70% of families in Tanzania who supplement their income by raising chickens. The device enables these families to artificially incubate eggs at home rather than rely on hens from their subsistence flocks for egg incubation. Developed by Kukua Labs of San Francisco, Calif., Kukua is a low-wattage device, which both reduces the cost of operation and makes it compatible with local residential solar power systems. Ahmed Mahmoud and Kamran Mahmudov of Team WETech (seated at left) discuss their invention ? the wind-powered pond aeration system “WERLWind” ? with judges and facilitators from the ISHOW in Washington, D.C. The third winning invention, WERLWind, is a wind-powered pond aeration system that was developed for the more than 20 million fish farmers in the Asia-Pacific region who depend on small-scale aquaculture for both food and income, but whose yields are less than industrial ponds because of low dissolved oxygen levels in the water. The company behind WERLWind, WETech of Toronto, Canada, was an ISHOW USA finalist last year. The company used the feedback provided by last years judges to improve both their manufacturing and business plans ? a move that resulted in a grand prize win at this years competition. ASME congratulates and thanks all ISHOW winners and finalists for serving as catalysts of progress and social good, said ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. What to Ask During Your First Week at Work - The Muse What to Ask During Your First Week at Work Your first few weeks at a new job can be exhilarating. It’s often fast-paced and full of brand new things that can reignite a spark that you lost. After all, that might’ve been your reason for looking for this new gig in the first place. But, it can also be overwhelming. And when you look at all the meetings on your calendar, you might think that your goal is to survive it. You can always go back and re-learn anything you missed this week, right? And in a lot of ways, that’s true. Nobody expects you to master everything you learn during your first month, especially when it comes to understanding the finer details about your company. But there is an important question you should ask in every meeting you have (when it makes sense, of course): How can my work make your life easier? You might be thinking, “I barely know where the coffee machine is! How can I think about helping anyone else right now?” And that’s totally fair. But on my first day at my current job, my boss suggested that I set up meetings with everyone on my team and ask each of them this question. It was terrifying, and if I’m being honest, I really didn’t want to do it. But I didn’t want to disappoint my new boss more, so I got over my fear and piped up. And when I did, I was pleasantly surprised by how it went. Some people had really strong opinions. Others told me that they hadn’t even thought about it, but appreciated that I opened the conversation with that question. But what I ultimately learned was that your intro meetings don’t have to be a one-way street. As much as you have to learn, it’s important to remember that you were hired to bring something different to the table- and you can do that as early as your first week on the job. Again, I’m not going to pretend that this won’t be uncomfortable. I also understand that in some meetings, this will be seen as completely out-of-context. But when the opportunity presents itself and it feels like the next natural thing to say- challenge yourself to say it. And then, before you worry you’re putting too much on your plate, know that you can respond with, “That’s really interesting to hear, once I’m completely onboarded, I’d love to find more time to discuss how can I start making this happen.” I know. Asking this question might not make your first month any easier, but it’ll make the exact right impression on your new team. Not to mention, it’ll set you up to prioritize your tasks correctly. So take a deep breath and do it!

I immediately see what I was working on last and where my team members have made progress- all of their contributions marked with their names and pictures. I laugh when I read a colleague’s latest comments; I can imagine her voice, and it feels as though she is right here with me, sharing a coffee, rather than miles away in a different time zone.Can software make you happy? Somehow I derive a modest amount of joy from the project management software I use. Very often, though, the software makes us feel bored, isolated, or even angry. Most of us are spending more time than ever using technol ogy, particularly at work: In a  McKinsey report, Michael Chui and his colleagues  point out that in the modern work environment, managers and professionals spend an average of 28 hours each week interacting with media and technology. Instead of feeling dull, unpleasant, or downright frustrating, what if these interactions could actually foster positive emotions? Our dozens of hours of weekly screen time would be transformed into opportunities to elevate our mood and sense of well-being- and thus elevate the emotional tone of our daily lives.There are numerous formal workplace wellness programs that aim to increase employees’ physical and emotional well-being and make their work feel meaningful by adding something to the day, like meditation. As effective as they may be, they do little to make the everyday tasks we’re already doing- checking email, working on spreadsheets, writing text- more healthy, meaningful, or even joyful.So where does software fit in? Our team at the Infor mation Experience and Design Research Group at Stuttgart Media University believes that we should actively design software products to foster a more positive user experience (UX) whenever people interact with them. That way, no matter what else people do- whether or not they are actively working on their own well-being or have access to a wellness program- the technologies they use will be quietly supporting happy, positive experiences rather than detracting from them.Six types of positive user experiencesAccording to researcher  Marc Hassenzahl, the UX of a product is good when the user feels positive while interacting with it. And the user feels good when his psychological needs are fulfilled, including the human need to feel capable, free, and close to others.To build positive experiences at work, one approach is to  ask people  about the positive experiences they’re already having offline, and then use this knowledge to create new experiences in a digital context. We interview ed about 400 participants of different ages and occupations, including students, engineers, landscape gardeners, teachers, personal trainers, military servicemen, social workers, and retirees, about their experiences at work. They told us about 350 positive experiences they had, which we then analyzed to see whether we could find any underlying patterns.Our  analysis  revealed 17 different categories of positive experiences at work that, in turn, can be clustered into six themes. When technology is designed according to these categories, this creates more possibilities for positive experiences during our daily work routines. Here are the  six types of positive user experiences.1. Resonance: Receiving feedback, giving feedback, and receiving appreciation.  We all know how good it feels when we don’t just work in a vacuum but receive feedback about our efforts. Then, we feel seen and useful- particularly if the feedback is positive. Feedback strengthens our sense that we can succeed and fulfills our psychological need to feel competent.Software can easily provide feedback about what we have achieved, and research suggests that getting feedback on your progress during a computer task feels good and helps you concentrate more. For example, in a software designing class we taught, one group of students designed a video reel that would show the user his last 50 actions in a 3D design program. Reels like this are used in video games to make gamers feel pride in their performance. When the 3D software users see the video reel, they might experience a similar feeling of pride and motivation as they return to work on a project.Gratitude  is one specific kind of positive feedback we get from others, which helps build and maintain our relationships, and it can also be incorporated into software. For example, in cooperation with a CRM company, we created  design concepts  to improve the UX of their content management software. This included a feature allowing users to se nd a quick thank you to their coworkers to appreciate their cooperation.2. Social support: Helping others, receiving help, and teaching others.  Compared to  resonance,  social support  refers to the positive experiences on the two sides of a supportive interaction, such as helping or teaching. Being asked for help or being able to give good advice makes us feel  proud  and valuable.Software can offer us opportunities to help and teach. In cooperation with a software company, we worked on improving the user experience of their distribution software. In the existing version of the software, salespeople could store information about current and potential customers whom they interact with repeatedly. We included a function where they could enter informal information about the customers- like their hobbies, how many children they have, or their upcoming travel. Rather than just uploading all their knowledge about a customer into a database (where it would disappear into the abyss), the salespeople could share it to help colleagues who might visit this customer in the future.3. Challenge: Being given a challenge and rising to a challenge.Rising to a challenge feels good when a task is demanding but still manageable. Software can support complex and demanding tasks by providing all the information and functionality required, so that we can focus on problem-solving. This does not mean that software should be designed so it is deliberately hard to use and poses a challenge in itself, but rather that it allows the user to notice that they have risen to a challenge.4. Engagement: Solving a problem and experiencing creativity.  We feel good when our minds are fully engaged, working intensely until we find a solution or coming up with new and creative ideas. This kind of deep work is something that software can support.For example, if we’re working on a difficult task, it might not be easy to find an optimal solution on our first try. Software can allow for multiple ver sions and plans, so that ideas can change and evolve without early attempts being lost forever. This is a case where a feature that was designed to do something completely different (to store information and to ensure that no information gets lost) can support new types of experiences- allowing the user to take risks, explore, and try things out because they know their changes to a piece of code, a text document, or an image will not be irreversible.5. Organization: Finishing a task and keeping track of things.  Have you ever finished a task and felt lost or overwhelmed, unsure what to turn to next? Our research suggests that people have positive experiences when software allow them to keep an overview of an entire project and how their current tasks fit into it.Indeed, when we interviewed the users of a project manage ment tool, we found that one positive experience for project managers was to file away completed tasks. To support this experience, one idea might be to have software illustrate completed tasks in the form of a tower that gets higher with every checked-off item.6. Communication and new experiences: Connecting with others, exchanging ideas, experiencing something new, creating something together, and contributing to something greater.  Feeling like we belong in a team or a company is  important  to our sense of meaningfulness at work, and we have found that technology can support this, as well. For the 3D simulation program, we developed a way to show users that they were working together to contribute to something greater. In  our design, when engineers open the program, they see on the screen how many other engineers are using their 3D model and where they are located. Our studies showed that this gave the engineers a greater feeling of meaning.The ethics of positive UXThe aim of d esigning for a positive UX in workplace technology is to help people have fulfilling experiences when they interact with it. But is positive UX just a way for employers to manipulate people into working longer hours, or for corporations to keep us addicted to their technology?Of course, we believe that positive UX should be used to boost people’s happiness, not for these other purposes. The main focus is the positive feeling users have when completing work tasks. Nevertheless, that positive feeling may have  certain side effects- like people working faster because the design supports their concentration, people being more loyal to certain products, or people spending more time at work if it becomes more gratifying (so they feel less urge to escape from unpleasant, frustrating technology).Designing for positive UX in professional software can help plant the seeds for a new way of thinking about how we design workplaces and working conditions in general. Some people are already expl oring similar ideas under the framework of  Positive Design- designing products to help people make moral decisions, experience positive emotions, and pursue their personal goals- and  Positive Computing- designing computers to support psychological well-being and human potential.Positive approaches like these mean moving away from a focus on efficiency to put human well-being front and center. We spend so much time at work, and work is an essential source of our self-image and self-confidence, not to mention our livelihood. But professional software- compared to many apps and games we use in our leisure time- puts much less emphasis on creating positive user experiences. History of the Army National Guard History of the Army National Guard The Army National Guard predates the founding of the nation and a standing military by almost a century and a half and is, therefore, the oldest component of the United States armed forces. Americas first permanent militia regiments, among the oldest continuing units in history, were organized by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636. Since that time, the Guard has participated in every U.S. conflict from the Pequot War of 1637 to our current deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq). Todays National Guard is the direct descendant of the militias of the thirteen original English colonies. The first English settlers brought many cultural influences and English military ideas with them. For most of its history, England had no full-time, professional Army. The English had relied on a militia of citizen-soldiers who had an obligation to assist in national defense. The first colonists in Virginia and Massachusetts knew that they had to rely on themselves for their defense. Although the colonists feared the traditional enemies of England, the Spanish, and Dutch, their main threat came from the thousands of native Americans who surrounded them. Initially, relations with the Indians were relatively peaceful, but as the colonists took more and more of the Indians land, war became inevitable. In 1622, Indians massacred nearly one-quarter of the English invaders in Virginia. In 1637, the English in New England went to war against the Pequot Indians of Connecticut. These first Indian wars began a pattern which was to continue on the American frontier for the next 250 years a type of warfare that the colonists had not experienced in Europe. By the time of the French and Indian War, which began in 1754, the colonists had been fighting Indians for generations. To augment their forces in North America, the British recruited regiments of Provincials from the militia. These colonial regiments brought to the British Army badly-needed skills in frontier warfare. Major Robert Rogers of New Hampshire formed a regiment of rangers who performed reconnaissance and conducted long-range raids against the French and their Indian allies. The Making of a New Nation Barely ten years after the end of the French and Indian War, the colonists were at war with the British and the militia was poised to play a crucial role in the revolution. Most of the regiments of the Continental Army, commanded by former militia colonel George Washington, were recruited from the militia. As the war progressed, American commanders learned how to make use of citizen-soldiers to help defeat the British Army. When the fighting moved to the southern states in 1780, successful American generals learned to call out the local militia for specific battles, to augment their full-time Continental troops. At the same time, these Southern militiamen were fighting a brutal civil war with their neighbors loyal to the King. Both the Patriots and Loyalists raised militias, and on both sides, joining the militia was the ultimate test of political loyalty. Americans recognized the important role played by the militia in winning the Revolutionary War. When the nations founders debated what form the government of the new nation would take, great attention was paid to the institution of the militia. The framers of the Constitution reached a compromise between the opposing point of view of the federalists and anti-federalists. The Federalists believed in a strong central government and wanted a large standing Army with a militia firmly under control of the Federal government. The anti-federalists believed in the power of the states and small or non-existent regular Army with state controlled militias. The President was given control of all military forces as Commander-in-Chief, but Congress was provided the sole power to raise the taxes to pay for military forces and the right to declare war. In the militia, power was divided between the individual states and the Federal government. The Constitution gave the states the right to appoint officers and supervise training, and the Federal government was granted the authority to impose standards. In 1792, Congress passed a law which remained in effect for 111 years. With a few exceptions, the 1792 law required all males between the ages of 18 to 45 to enroll in the militia. Volunteer companies of men who would buy their uniforms and equipment were also authorized. The Federal government would set standards of organization and provide limited money for weapons and ammunition. Unfortunately, the 1792 law did not require inspections by the Federal government  or penalties for non-compliance with the law. As a result, in many states the enrolled militia went into a long decline; once-a-year musters were often poorly organized and ineffective. Nevertheless, during the War of 1812, the militia provided the infant republics main defense against the British invaders. War With Mexico The War of 1812 demonstrated that despite its geographic and political isolation from Europe, the United States still needed to maintain military forces. The militia component of that military force was increasingly filled by the growing number of volunteers (as opposed to mandatory enrollment) militia. Many states began to rely completely on their volunteer units  and to spend their limited Federal funds entirely on them. Even in the mostly rural South, these units tended to be an urban phenomenon. Clerks and craftsmen made up most of the force; the officers, usually elected by the members of the unit, were often wealthier men such as lawyers or bankers. As increasing numbers of immigrants began to arrive in the 1840s and 1850s, ethnic units such as the Irish Jasper Greens and the German Steuben Guards began to spring up. Militia units made up 70% of the U.S. Army that fought the Mexican War in 1846 and 1847. During this first American war fought entirely on foreign soil, there was considerable friction between regular Army officers and militia volunteers, a friction that would reappear during subsequent wars. Regulars were upset when militia officers outranked them and at times complained that the volunteer troops were sloppy and poorly disciplined. But complaints about the militias fighting abilities declined as they helped win critical battles. The Mexican War set a military pattern which the nation would follow for the next 100 years: the regular officers provided military know-how and leadership; citizen-soldiers provided the bulk of the fighting troops. The Civil War In terms of the percentage of the male population involved, the Civil War was by far the biggest war in U.S. history. It was also the bloodiest: more Americans died than in both World Wars combined. When the war began in April  1861 at Fort Sumter, both Northern and Southern militia units rushed to join the Army. Both sides thought the war would be short: in the North, the first volunteers were only enlisted for 90 days. After the wars first battle, at Bull Run, it became obvious that the war would be a long one. President Lincoln called for 400,000 volunteers to serve for three years. Many militia regiments returned home, recruited and reorganized, and returned as three-year volunteer regiments. After most of the militia, both North and South were on active duty; each side turned to conscription. The Civil War draft law was based on the legal obligation to serve in the militia, with quotas for each state. Many of the most famous Civil War units, from the 20th Maine which saved the Union line at Gettysburg to Stonewall Jacksons famous brigade of foot cavalry, were militia units. The largest percentage of Civil War battle streamers are carried by units of the Army National Guard. Reconstruction and Industrialization After the end of the Civil War, the South was under military occupation. Under Reconstruction, a states right to organize its militia was suspended, to be returned only when that state had an acceptable Republican government. Many African-Americans joined the militia units formed by these governments. The end of Reconstruction in 1877 brought the militia back to white control, but black militia units survived in Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and five Northern states. In all sections of the country, the late 19th century was a period of growth for the militia. Labor unrest in the industrializing Northeast and Midwest caused those states to examine their need for a military force. In many states large and elaborate armories, often built to resemble medieval castles, were constructed to house militia units. It was also during this period that many states began to rename their militia National Guard. The name was first adopted before the Civil War by New York States militia in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, hero of the American Revolution, who commanded the Garde Nationale in the early days of the French Revolution. In 1898, after the U.S. battleship Maine blew up in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, the U.S. declared war on Spain (Cuba was a Spanish colony). Because it was decided that the President did not have the right to send the National Guard outside the United States, Guard units volunteered as individuals but then re-elected their officers and remained together. National Guard units distinguished themselves in the Spanish-American War. The most famous unit of the war was a cavalry unit partly recruited from Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona National Guardsmen, Teddy Roosevelts Rough Riders. The real importance of the Spanish-American War was not, however, in Cuba: it was in making the United States a power in the Far East. The U.S. Navy took the Philippines from Spain with little trouble, but the Filipinos wanted independence, and the U.S. had to send troops to hold the islands. Because most of the regular Army was in the Caribbean, three-quarters of the first U.S. troops to fight in the Philippines were from the National Guard. They were the first American troops to fight in Asia  and the first to fight a foreign enemy who used classic guerrilla tactics tactics which would again be employed against U.S. troops in Vietnam more than 60 years later. Military Reform Problems during the Spanish-American War demonstrated that if the U.S. was to be an international power, its military was in need of reform. Many politicians and Army officers wanted a much larger full-time Army, but the country had never had a large regular Army in peacetime and was unwilling to pay for it. Further, states-rights advocates in Congress defeated plans for a totally Federal reserve force in favor of reforming the militia, or National Guard. In 1903, a piece of landmark legislation opened the way for increased modernization of, and Federal control over the National Guard. The law provided increased Federal funding, but to obtain it, National Guard units had to reach minimum strengths and be inspected by Regular Army officers. Guardsmen were required to attend 24 drills per year, and five days of annual training, for which they received pay for the first time. In 1916, another act was passed, guaranteeing the state militias status as the Armys primary reserve force, and requiring that all states rename their militia National Guard. The National Defense Act of 1916 prescribed qualifications for National Guard officers and allowed them to attend U.S. Army schools; required that each National Guard unit would be inspected and recognized by the War Department, and ordered that National Guard units would be organized like regular Army units. The act also specified that Guardsmen would be paid not just for annual training, but also for their drills. The First World War The National Defense Act of 1916 was passed while the Mexican bandit and revolutionary Pancho Villa was raiding the border towns of the Southwest. The entire National Guard was called to active duty by President Woodrow Wilson, and within four months, 158,000 Guardsmen were in place along the Mexican border. Guardsmen stationed on the border in 1916 saw no action. But in the spring of 1917, the U.S. declared war on Germany and entered World War I, and the Guardsmen had a chance to put their training to good use. The National Guard played a major role in World War I. Its units were organized into divisions by state, and those divisions made up 40% of the combat strength of the American Expeditionary Force. Three of the first five U.S. Army divisions to enter combat in World War I was from the National Guard. Further, the highest number of World War I Medals of Honor recipients were from the 30th Division, made up of National Guardsmen from the Carolinas and Tennessee. Between the Wars The years between World Wars I and II were quiet ones for the Army and for the National Guard. The most significant developments occurred in what would become known as the Air National Guard. The National Guard had a few airplanes before World War I, but only two New York aviation units were formally organized. After the war, Army organization charts called for each division to have an observation squadron (the primary mission of aircraft in those days was reconnaissance), and the National Guard was eager to form their own squadrons. By 1930, the National Guard had 19 observation squadrons. The Depression put an end to the activation of new flying units, but several more would be organized just before the U.S. entered World War II. Preparing to Fight By the summer of 1940, World War II was raging. Much of Europe was in the hands of Nazi Germany. In the fall of 1940, the nations first peacetime draft was enacted, and the National Guard was called to active duty. The draft and mobilization were to last for only one year, but in September 1941, the term of service for draftees and mobilized Guardsmen was extended. Three months later the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and the U.S. entered World War II. World War II All 18 National Guard divisions all saw combat in World War II  and were split between the Pacific and European theaters. National Guardsmen fought from the beginning. Three National Guard units participated in the heroic defense of Bataan in the Philippines before finally surrendering to the Japanese in the spring of 1942. When the U.S. Marines needed reinforcements on Guadalcanal in the autumn of 1942, North Dakotas 164th Infantry became the first large body of U.S. Army troops to fight offensively in World War II. In the European theater, one National Guard division, the 34th from Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota  was the first to arrive overseas, and among the first into combat, in North Africa. The 34th went on to spend the rest of the war fighting in Italy  and claimed more actual combat days than any other World War II division. The Korean War The years following World War II saw the creation of the U.S. Air Force from what had been the U.S. Army Air Forces. National Guard flying units became part of the new service, creating the Air National Guard. The new reserve component did not have long to wait before its first combat test. The Korean War began in June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea. Within two months, the first of 138,600 Army National Guardsmen were mobilized, and National Guard units began arriving in South Korea in January of 1951. By the summer of 1951, a large number of non-divisional engineer and artillery units in Korea were from the National Guard. In November, two National Guard infantry divisions, the 40th from California and the 45th from Oklahoma arrived to fight the North Koreans and Chinese. The Turbulent 60s The 1960s began with a partial mobilization of the National Guard as part of the U.S. response to the Soviet Unions building of the Berlin Wall. Although none left the United States, nearly 45,000 Army Guardsmen spent a year in Active Federal Service. As the decade progressed, President Lyndon Johnson made the fateful political decision not to mobilize the Reserves to fight the Vietnam War  but to rely on the draft instead. But when the bombshell of the Viet Cong Tet Offensive struck in 1968, 34 Army National Guard units found themselves alerted for active duty, eight of which served in South Vietnam. Some National Guard units that remained in the U.S. still found themselves on the front lines. As urban riots and then anti-war demonstrations swept parts of the country in the late 1960s, the Guard, in its role as a state militia, was called upon increasingly for riot control duties. For the country as a whole, the 1960s were a period of social change. Those changes were mirrored in the National Guard, particularly in its racial and ethnic composition. Beginning with New Jersey in 1947, the northern states began the process of racially integrating their National Guards. The landmark Civil Rights Act of 1965 forced the Southern states to follow suit, and 25 years later African-Americans made up nearly one-quarter of the Army National Guard. African-American men had a history of militia service stretching back to colonial days; women, regardless of race, did not. Because the Militia Act of 1792 and the National Defense Act of 1916 had referred specifically to males, it took special legislation to allow women to join. For 15 years the only women in the National Guard were nurses, but in the 1970s, all the armed services began expanding opportunities for women. Following Army and Air Force policies, the National Guard saw its number of women recruits begin a steady rise that continues today. The Total Force Goes to War The end of the draft in 1973 ushered in a period of tremendous change for the U.S. military. Cut off from their source of cheap manpower, and under pressure to cut costs, the active services realized they must make better use of their reserve components. The Air Guard had been integrated into the workings of the Air Force since the mid-1950s. By the mid-1970s the Total Force policy resulted in more Army National Guard missions, equipment, and training opportunities than ever before. The National Guard shared in the huge defense buildup initiated by President Ronald Reagan. In 1977, the first small Army National Guard detachment had traveled overseas to spend their two weeks of active duty training with regular Army units. Nine years later, the Wisconsin National Guards 32nd Infantry Brigade was deployed to Germany with all its equipment for the major NATO exercise REFORGER. By the end of the 1980s, Army National Guard units were supplied with the latest weaponry and equipment and would soon get a chance to use it. In response to Iraqs invasion of oil-rich Kuwait in August 1990, Operation Desert Storm brought the largest mobilization of the National Guard since the Korean War. More than 60,000 Army Guard personnel were called to active duty for the Gulf War. As the air campaign against Iraq began Operation Desert Storm in January 1991, thousands of Army National Guard men and women, most of them from combat service and combat service support units, were in Southwest Asia, preparing for the ground campaign against the Iraqi forces. Two-thirds of those mobilized would eventually see service in the wars main theater of operations. Occurring soon after the Guards return from the Arabian Peninsula, hurricanes in Florida and Hawaii and a riot in Los Angeles drew attention to the National Guards role in its communities. That role has increased as the Guard, active for years in drug interdiction and eradication efforts institutes new and innovative community outreach programs. Since the end of Desert Storm, the National Guard has seen the nature of its Federal mission change, with more frequent call-ups in response to crises in Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, and the skies over Iraq. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, more than 50,000 Guardmembers were called up by both their States and the Federal government to provide security at home and combat terrorism abroad. In the largest and swiftest response to a domestic disaster in history, the Guard deployed more than 50,000 troops in support of the Gulf States following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Today, tens of thousands of Guardmembers are serving in harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan, as the National Guard continues its historic dual mission, providing to the states units trained and equipped to protect life and property, while providing to the nation units trained, equipped and ready to defend the United States and its interests, all over the globe. Research from Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America  found that  57% of millennials have spent  money they weren’t originally planning to on products they saw in their social media feeds.Larson Research + Strategy surveyed 3,006 people ages 20-70 who made at least $30,000 annually and were living in the U.S, on behalf of Allianz.  Here are some of the points that stood out.Social media has wide-ranging effects on millennialsThe research found that while 61% of these young people reported feeling like they don’t have enough, or their lives aren’t good enough because of social media, 55% say they’ve felt FOMO, or “fear of missing out.”Half of the respondents said they spend a greater amount of cash “on going out” than they did on housing, and  88% think social media makes analyzing how your “w ealth/lifestyle” stacks up to others’ more common.Paul Kelash, vice president of Consumer Insights for Allianz Life, commented on the findings:“Millennials are finding innovative ways to build their financial strength and are becoming more confident because of these actions,”  he said. “But, more than any other generation, social media and the allure to spend beyond their means could have long-term negative effects on their finances if they’re not careful.”Young people choose to spend their money in different ways -  research has also found that many millennials dole out more cash on coffee than they put away for retirement.Here’s how millennials feel about moneySpeaking of saving up for the Golden Years, 58% of millennials reported thinking that putting away money for that time in their lives “is a basic necessity, like food or housing.” This generation had “median retirement savings” of $35,000, which the press release describes as “equal to Gen Xers, wh o have less time to build their nest egg.”Forty-one percent of millennials said they “set aside” cash monthly “for saving,” versus 36% of those in Generation X.Just under half (48%) of millennials who have a 401(k) put away a minimum of 10% each month, while 44% of Baby Boomers and 36% of people in Generation X do so.While saving for their futures at a higher rate than other generations, 70% of millennials feel “overwhelmed” when it comes to the idea of supporting themselves and family members “in the long term,” and many believe that working with “a financial professional” would be a big help in that department.

She was trying to play  basketball  on the court. She had typically had a lot of problems getting the ball in the basket. Her upper body strength may not have been what it needed to be. She was  too short, really, and she couldn’t get that ball up there. I’m sure it informed my choice in how I approached the problem. I di dn’t want to tell her ‘don’t give up’ or ‘push harder’ or ‘keep trying.’ So I changed the goal for her.She was about to give up and I said, ‘Do one more thing for me before you quit. I want you to take 20 shots at that  basket, but I want you to miss. I don’t want you to make any of the baskets.’ But I said, ‘You can’t just miss. You have to just barely miss. And if you get it in, you lose.’ I don’t know why, but she went ahead and did it. After only a couple of shots, that ball started going in.She was surprised. I think it helped her. She did go on to play basketball with other kids in a league, and she did just fine, and that was great. But I knew why it worked - and I don’t think she did, although maybe she knows why now. She’s almost 20 now. But it worked because first of all, we took the shame out of the whole activity. She was supposed to  fail. So if she failed to fail, she would succeed. Basically, she was either going to succeed or she wa s going to succeed.Sometimes when we try to achieve a goal, there’s a whole lot of baggage attached to that, and I just took the baggage away so all she had to focus on was the task. If my daughter had to shoot a goal, and she failed, it would change what kind of person she is to her,  it said something about who she was as a person, and if she was successful. I knew she was susceptible to that kind of thought process because I’m susceptible to that kind of thought process. By telling her she had to just barely miss the goal, that’s such a strange thing to do that she couldn’t attach it to any emotional resonance in herself. It was just weird.Like, why would you try to just barely miss? So she was completely focused on the actual activity. And because she wasn’t a fantastic basketball player, she couldn’t just barely miss. Instead, she got it in, because you have to be really good to just barely miss the goal, but if you’re not that good, you’re going to get it in.Th e Feldenkrais Method examines a person’s ability to understand their own capacity by taking away everything except for the idea of functional movement. The method has people engage in some kind of movement task - like reaching, twisting, or turning, and adding some kind of examination to that which is curious, patient and tends to have no goals attached to it. If that activity is done curiously, it takes away all the stress. It’s such a strange movement, just like the basketball goal thing, that you get really interested in exactly what it is you’re doing. When you start paying attention to what you’re doing as opposed to who you should be, amazing things can happen. When you come out of that exploration, you find that your body image has changed, you feel different, you walk different, and you can do different things.It changed everything. It changed the way she looked at the goal and the way she thought about using her arms and her body and it worked. I was really pleased that it worked. It didn’t necessarily have to, but I’m really happy that it did.Basketball has never been a huge part of her life or anything like that, but she was on the court and she was frustrated that she couldn’t get the ball in. So it was a great moment for her.
